Can I mix antifreeze?
Antifreezes are special fluids designed to cool an engine, which freezes at very low temperatures. For the convenience of the consumer, antifreezes have a different color — red, blue, yellow, green. The liquid of a certain chemical composition has its own color. For example, acids are the basis of red antifreezes, and silicates (salts) form green and blue. Therefore, the question arises - is it possible to mix antifreeze?
The answer to this question is different in each case. It all depends on what kind of coolant you are going to mix. Mixing fluids from different manufacturers is highly undesirable, since their component composition may be incompatible. Each manufacturer, as a rule, uses its own additives that improve the properties of antifreeze.
Some are used as additives inorganic compounds - amine, phosphate and boron-nitrite inhibitors.Foreign manufacturers use in chemical additives of a new type. When interacting with each other, the anti-corrosion property of the entire mixture may deteriorate, which will lead to early wear of all system components.
Imported antifreezes have a higher compatibility with each other than domestic ones. But this does not mean that they can be confused thoughtlessly.
Can I mix different antifreeze
It is also mistaken that it is possible to interfere with coolants having the same color. This statement arose on the statement that a certain chemical composition of a liquid corresponds to a certain color. But it is not always the case.
Some manufacturers may use the relationship of color and composition within their own product line, while others may not adhere to it. You can pour, for example, red antifreeze to red, and then scold yourself for rashness. But you can add blue to your red liquid, but the chemical composition is completely identical. And this happens in practice.
So what's to do, if you have decreased level of antifreeze in the radiator?
Just add distilled water. But it should be remembered that if the life of antifreeze is five years, then adding water, you reduce it by one year. That is, a complete replacement of the coolant will need to be made in 4 years.
