How to treat colitis?
Colitis is a group of diseases characterized by inflammatory lesions of the intestinal mucosa, or rather of the colon. In the article we will tell you how to treat colitis, what means and medications to use, and also what diets to follow. But first, a few words about the types of colitis, since the treatment is most often chosen precisely depending on the type.
How to treat intestinal colitis: types of colitis
Here it should be noted that it is necessary to treat colitis, depending on its type, because different colitis may also manifest itself in different ways. For example, colitis with signs of functional diarrhea is characterized by frequent loose stools and sudden urges to it, which can be quite strong. There may also be bloating, rumbling and aching pain in the abdomen. As for colitis with signs of spastic constipation, in this case there may be a delay in stool for several days (up to 3-4 days), which is accompanied by quite sharp pains and abundant gas formation, and with feces quite a lot of mucus.Colitis with atonic constipation (that is, with a sluggish wall of the rectum) is characterized by the absence of independent stools (up to 3 or more days), but also the absence of the urge to it. In humans, bloating increases, lethargy and fatigue occur, and fecal stones can often be formed.
How to cure colitis
Most often, in any form of acute colitis, the main procedure is a complete fast for one or two days. After that, you need to gradually go on a diet that the doctor recommended. By the way, since accurately diagnosing a particular type of colitis is a difficult task, to put it mildly, I strongly recommend that you consult with your doctor after the first signs of the disease are detected. If an infection is detected, antibacterial or antiparasitic therapy is prescribed to patients, and in toxic colitis (poisoning the intestines), saline laxatives are prescribed. In any case, you must first activate or, conversely, soothe the intestines, stop diarrhea or constipation, as well as relieve spasms. Treatment almost always consists of diet and the use of medicines (various antiseptics are used to treat colitis, antispasmodics, analgesics, laxatives or sedatives, as well as vitamins and bacterial preparations). In addition, phytotherapy and therapeutic enemas are prescribed to patients, which are very useful and to which we will devote the whole next chapter.
We are treated with enemas
Enemas - this is perhaps the most important method of treatment of colitis. There are medicinal and cleansing enemas. In order for cleansing enemas to act immediately, you need to take 0.5-1 liters of water (temperature 35-36 degrees Celsius with spastic colitis, so as not to cause a spasm and 22-23 degrees with other colitis) and slowly and gradually introduce an enema into the intestine. True, there are cleansing enemas and subsequent action. For them, use 150-200 ml of vegetable oil or 500 ml or more of oil-water suspension, heated to 30 degrees or room temperature. The purpose of medicinal enemas is to deliver substances with an astringent and enveloping or anti-inflammatory effect (this could be, for example, a chamomile, calendula, or medication infusion) to the inflamed intestinal mucosa. Such enemas give an excellent effect on any type of colitis. The volume of medicinal enemas should consist of 500-700 ml of infusion at a temperature of 36-38 degrees. You can also a tablespoon of pharmaceutical chamomile or a teaspoon of calendula pour a glass of boiling water, insist and strain. Note that after the introduction of medicinal enemas, it is desirable to keep the infusion in the intestine for about 5 minutes. The course of medicinal enemas usually ranges from 1 to 3 weeks, depending on how the patient is, and the enemas themselves are done 2-3 times a day. Well, now turn to diets.
What can you eat with colitis
With colitis, on the one hand, a sparing diet is required, and on the other, a complete, vitamin-rich diet is required to ensure proper intestinal function. No need to abuse laxatives and enemas, strictly observing the prescribed mode. You need to eat 4 to 6 times a day, if possible without irritating the intestines with solid and / or dry food. Various porridges are well suited for diets, and only with severe exacerbations the amount of carbohydrates that are ingested with food should not exceed 300 g.With non-specific ulcerative colitis, milk and dairy products should be completely excluded from the diet, which can even lead to a complete cure from this unpleasant disease.
Chronic colitis: how to treat
In chronic colitis, the protein table most often helps (the daily protein intake should be about 150 g per day). But it is necessary to exclude from the diet various sweets and dough products. In addition, fruits and vegetables are best taken in a boiled or shabby form. Also in the treatment of chronic colitis an excellent addition to the diet are mineral waters and therapeutic mud. From mineral waters, we note "Essentuki" under number 17. Diet for intestinal colitis is selected depending on the type of colitis.
- With spastic constipation, food should contain approximately equal fiber and animal protein.
- With functional diarrhea, there should be more protein products in animals, excluding whole milk. Vegetable food should be subjected to heat treatment, and it should not contain coarse fiber.
- With atonic constipation, on the contrary, there is a lot of fiber: drink fresh vegetable and fruit juices, eat salads from vegetables (fresh), boiled vegetables, and also bran bread or wholemeal flour.
Food with colitis should not be spicy, should also be eliminated from your diet smoked. Products must be both high-calorie and easily digestible. The best boiled or steamed food. Well helps boiled beets, steamed peeled pumpkin, prunes, dates, figs.
Treatment of colitis folk remedies
Good help with colitis various herbal infusions. So, it is very useful to brew raspberry leaves or berries. To do this, 4 teaspoons need to pour 2 cups of boiling water and infuse for 30 minutes, and take half a cup before meals 4 times a day. You can also find excellent recipes from herbs and other folk remedies - it’s just not possible to describe them all here, so let's turn to the original.
