Gomel is located in the Republic of Belarus. You can find it in the northern part of the Dnieper lowland, within the Gomel Polesie region. In turn, Gomel Polesie is included in the Belarusian Polesye province.
The geological feature of this city is its proximity to the Chechersk Plain. Regarding the very name of the city there are several versions.
The most common version is that the name of the city comes from the creek Gomejuk. This stream flows into the river Sozh, where the first settlement was once founded. It is believed that the city was founded in 1147. It was then that began the chronicle mention. Then the city was called Gomiy.At the moment, the city is quite developed both in industrial and administrative terms. The city has several sports facilities, including the Athletics Palace and the Water Sports Palace. In addition, there are several universities and other educational institutions in the city.
A health care system has been established, there are cultural institutions, including libraries, the state circus, a community center and two theaters. Also in the city there are media, clubs, historical reconstruction and various attractions. Among them, the Ferris Tower.
