Why shout "bitterly" at a wedding?

We used to scream "bitterly" at the wedding table. But few know where this strange custom came from. There are several different opinions, let's consider them.

According to one of the versions, initially the custom of kissing after a shout of “bitterly” did not look the same as today. In the old days in Russia, during the wedding feast, the bride went around the guests with a tray and vodka cups. Each of the invitees (note that the custom concerned only men) put a coin on the tray and took vodka. He drank and in proof that it was vodka that was brought to him, and nothing else, he said “bitterly!”. And then ... kissed the bride. Yes, yes, it was the guests, not the groom who was kissing the young one. This is one of the versions why they scream "bitterly" at a wedding. Gradually, the custom has changed, perhaps because it was not very pleasant for the groom to watch his friends kiss his beloved. Now the "monopoly" on the bride kisses entrenched for the groom. But the exclamation "bitter!" Remained.

This is just one version of why they scream bitterly at a wedding. On the other hand, instead of “bitterly!” It used to be called “hill!” Because weddings were celebrated mainly in winter. And one of the traditional fun was the game, like the "king of the hill." The bride and girlfriends stood on an icy hill, and the groom with friends tried to get there to kiss the girls. The rest of the guests cheered the youth with shouts of “Gorka!”. Later, the exclamation was transformed into "bitter!". But why did this happen, the authors of this version do not explain.

There are plenty of versions of the origin of this custom. For example, that shouting “bitterly!”, The guests meant the bitterness of the bride’s parting with her home. Or that in this way friends and relatives wanted to leave all the bitterness of quarrels and disputes at the wedding table, so that the future life of the young was as sweet as honey.
